This vessel is a functional vase that is made of coils. The outside of the vessel is smooth to seal any cracks and to keep it water tight. The vessel is about 1 foot tall and goes outward then back inward to keep it from being too boring.
I used a geometric design, similar to a cylinder. I based my geometric design on the works of art by Jonathan Middlemiss. He inspired me with his simple yet interesting geometric vessels. I am also using his geometric glazing technique to make intriguing designs on my vessel.
At first when I started my vessel, I thought that I was going to make the vessel go straight up then inward making a flower vase. Then, as I went on, I thought that going out, then in would make it more fun. I also was debating weather to keep the coils visible on the outside. I decided to smooth the outside to keep it water tight and to make it easier to glaze later.
I am overall satisfied with my vessel because I made it close to what I wanted it to be. I am also happy that i went for coils instead of slab because if I did slab, the process would have been more boring for me. I'm happy with the look of the inside because I think the coils look cool and they show how many coils it took to make the vessel.
